L.A. Noire Review: PC Edition

L.A. Noire is still an amazing game 10 years after its release with a story that entertains from start to finish. Besides the story, the games setting and characters will pull you into the time period of 1947 in Los Angeles. The game was ahead of its time upon release and because of that playing the game today will not feel dated.

Story

Conspiracy driven detective work is the name of the game in 1947 Los Angeles. You play as Cole Phelps who is a rookie detective looking to be known as the best. You get drawn into a case with a trio of bank robbers, the Nite Owl Gang. You are given the brief on your case and what happened, but the player decides what path they want to take from there. The game itself is filled with detective work in which you have to find clues and place the right clues together to solve a case and help the good guys. Throughout the game you will have to solve cases and investigate various witnesses. After each case you can save and make your way back to the beginning if you don't find any real answers.

Setting

While the setting in the game is fictional it will still transport you to the time period convincingly. The cars, buildings, and wardrobe all contribute to the effect nicely without hitting you over the head. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be a cop or investigator in a big city in the forties you will love this game.

Characters

One of the biggest attractions of L.A. Noire is the fact that it tells its story through gameplay instead of through cinematic cutscenes. Not only does it help you not get lost as a player but it also keeps you wanting to play further since the story never really rests. While the characters in the game will make you question the actions and decisions of the detective, you will never really doubt Phelps.

Players are able to have each game character develop over time into the character that they want to become. You can select an officer that has a shady past and choose to mentor him and change his outlook on life. This helps them become more likeable and believable.

Conclusion

L.A. Noire is still a fantastic game today and will pull you in. The polished graphics and incredible soundtrack will hold you over during long stretches of gameplay. If you were not already a fan, L.A. Noire will easily convert you.
