The first game in the series was developed by Core Design and released for PC, PlayStation and Saturn back in 1996. It became a massive hit proving Core Design's choice for a female protagonist and gameplay that includes stealth and puzzles was the right one. Since then the series has seen many releases and has recently been rebooted for newer systems.
Gameplay consists of exploration/platforming combined with moments of action, stealth and puzzle solving. It is one the earliest examples of 3D platforming and the protagonist, Lara Croft, became a poster girl for 3D rendering.
